GenAI Use Spectrum

A sliding scale running from I did not use AI for this task at one end to I used AI to fully automate this task at the other. Move the handle and the tool names where you have landed — Tool Use, for instance — and describes in plain words what that level of collaboration actually looked like: you used AI to generate a list of key terms to explore further on your own.

Underneath each position sits a Think It Through panel with the questions that matter more than the label: how did AI support, rather than replace, your thinking, and what decisions did you make independently of it? It is built as a teaching instrument. Rather than arguing in the abstract about whether AI use is acceptable, a class or a research group can each place their own practice on the spectrum and see the whole range in the room.
